Jewellery Designers Attempt Hollywood Stardom

By Adrian Jones

Jewelery Designers Develop Amazing Pieces For The Silver Screen

Jewellery designers have already been asked to send in items of costume jewellery they may have designed for the film industry. Amazing necklaces, bracelets and tiaras which have had their own starring role and adorned well-known film stars are being sought. Certainly the shimmering collection of glitter and bling for the movies are paste rather than diamonds, but they produce a good display.

Pieces by jewellery designers for films are going to be displayed at the Jewellery on Screen trade show at Somerset House on The Strand in London next June as part of London Jewellery Week. The show has got Orkney jewellery designers thinking about how some of our long-established collections which range from mens Celtic rings to modern day style jewellery could be just just the thing for the movie industry.

The Tudor range, by way of example, influenced by the precious stones and spectacular decoration of the period, is a timeless style for films about Elizabeth I featuring Cate Blanchet or Helen Mirren. And our Louise ring might actually adorn the finger of her namesake in Thelma and Louise, played by Susan Sarandon.

Jewellery Designers in the Movies

One Orkney collection provides Birdland necklaces, earrings, brooches and charms showing birds flying across a northern sky. Daphne du Maurier's novel, The Birds, however produced a scarier view of these things - not improved by a Hitchcock horror movie starring Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor! The Heart collection links with lots of famous films including the newly released Crazy Heart with Jeff Bridges. But in addition to the romantic Heart there's also Braveheart, who could gladly wear many of the mens Celtic rings or our Sword kiltpin design.

Sword, obviously has been a essential element in lots of films about Arthur, Camelot and Merlin. The well-known Willow design has got the same name as the quest film starring Val Kilmer and Joanne Walley and who knows what Toad and his friends would make of it in Wind in the Willows.

The modern day piece True relates to many films including the kooky True Romance starring Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette or True Grit, the John Wayne or Jeff Bridges variation. And Chanticleer, based on the saga of a rooster and a fox, may well be a nice style for the Fantastic Mr Fox.

There are lots of more blockbusters on the market that we could provide types to match. Orkney may not yet be among the centers for jewellery designers who provide pieces for Hollywood, but lots of our choices are displayed by stars who love our design and style.
