What Kind Of Treatment Does Cosmetic Dentistry Cover

By Adriana Noton

Cosmetic dentistry treatments can cover a whole long list of procedures. Many of these procedures are pretty simple and include such things as having amalgam fillings replaced with more aesthetically pleasing composite fillings which match natural tooth colour. Other procedures are more complicated and actually help repair the function of teeth. Most dentists offer a wide range of these procedures.

Lots of people choose to have their teeth whitening nowadays, as it's a very popular thing to have done. The actual treatment is simple and safe, but you should go to your dentist first. Anyone having this treatment should ensure their gums and teeth are free from any diseases. The solutions used are often quite strong and could exacerbate any underlying problems.

It's a very effective procedure and can be carried out in as little as an hour, or you can choose to have custom-made bleaching trays which can be worn at home. The advantage of choosing trays is that you can control the degree of bleaching, and can stop when you have reached the desired degree of whiteness. It's important to be realistic about this, and remember if you have any porcelain crowns or veneers bleaching will not change the shade.

If you are having an extensive makeover, then your dentist may recommend that you get your teeth bleached first before any crowns or veneers are made. This will give you a far more natural and accurate result. Veneers are a very popular and versatile treatment.

The advantage of these is that they can restore teeth which are slightly chipped and worn, and can even straighten out slightly crooked teeth. If you are having extensive veneer work then you may be able to choose to go a couple of shades lighter than your natural teeth. If cared for properly, veneers should last a considerable number of years as they are quite strong once cemented in place.

Lots of people have teeth which are slightly crooked, but may not want to wear braces. However nowadays orthodontic treatment doesn't have to involve a mouth full of metal. Modern braces are made out of a clear plastic and/or very easy to wear. It's much healthier to have straighter teeth as they are much easier to keep clean, and you are far less likely to suffer from tooth decay.

Nowadays braces don't have to be made out of metal and wire as the latest types are invisible. They are clear plastic shields which are replaced regularly as the teeth gradually move into position. These types of braces are great for adults who don't wish to advertise the fact that they are wearing braces.

Another nice thing about this type of brace is that you can take them out. The old fixed bridges are extremely tricky to clean properly, but this type can be thoroughly cleaned making them far more hygienic. If you are going out in the evening and really don't want to wear your brakes then you can leave it out.

Cosmetic dentistry also includes bridgework which is ideal for replacing missing teeth. However another option is to have dental implants which don't require the adjacent teeth to be filed down. These can cost a little more, but should last a lifetime.
