Websites To Watch For Romance Scams

By Arlene Case

Romance scams occur in a number of places and websites on the internet, with various methods being used. The internet is a rich hunting ground for opportunists and scammers who are on the prowl for unsuspecting victims.

Enumerated below are some of the favorite sites in the internet that are being targeted by dishonest schemers.

Free Dating Sites. There are always plenty of people in these sites who should know better. The scammers join dating sites, both paid and free ones, in order to hunt for victims. Few of these dating sites, if any at all, do not have these villains as members. They are always one step ahead of the website operators and it is practically impossible to identify and keep them out of the network. It is sad to note that some dating sites still have a nonchalant attitude till date to the activities of scammers and have not taken adequate measures to prevent innocent people using their services from the antics of the romance scammers.

Chat Rooms. Chat rooms are facilities made available by email servers for users to exchange messages. This has not escaped the notice of scammers who immediately staked their claims on the scene. These people visit these chat rooms and use them as a place to take advantage of others. The scammers typically enter a chat room and try to strike up a conversation with anyone they so choose out of the people in the room. They can communicate at will with people, knowing that sooner or later somebody will be curious enough take the bait. It is unfortunate that they are right most of the time.

Religious, social services, community sites, etc. Although such innocent sites as these are set up in order to offer help to the needy, and to help humanity, they do not escape the attention of scammers. The very fact that these types of websites are set up for humanitarian or religious purposes makes the people there especially vulnerable to the scammers. It is not consistent with the nature of its activities to subject incoming traffic to a screening process.
