Is it worth while creating your own business website?

By June White

Ask yourself a couple of basic questions before we dive in. To begin with, what is your situation? and secondly, why do you want to create a website? What is it for?

Learning to create a basic business website isn't rocket science, if it were then I am reasonably sure that there would be a lot more rocket scientists around and a lot less web designers.

To be effective at creating a web site you should ideally be the type of person who can pick things up fairly fast and also be adept at understanding new systems. This is frequently highly applicable to people that own or run a business. A lot of time learning about design fundamentals, CSS, HTML needs to be spent, then putting this new knowledge together as a website. This is where we come to the first question that you need to ask yourself. Do you have the time to acquire these skills?

With the state of present economy you could have been unfortunate enough to lose your job and be in the situation of deciding wether to re-join the rat-race and make an effort to find another job or to start up your own business. If this is your situation then creating your own basic website is completely possible.

You could, however be considering this option from a completely different situation. You could already own or run a business and struggle to find the time to carry out your normal workload. If this fits your situation then the website that you develop is probably not going to meet up to your current expectations.

What is it that you are hoping your new business website going to do for you? To answer this you need to look at the level your your business.

Are you a sole trader such as an electrician or a builder that just needs to set up a web presence so that people in your local area looking online for your nature of services can find your contact details and pick up the phone? If you tick these boxes then there is no reason that you shouldn't be able to create a successful basic business site.

If your business falls in to what is deemed to be a more professional sort of business such as accounting or a training provider then a basic looking site might not give an impression of your business that you want potential clients to see. If this fits your situation then it might be fitting for you to stick to running your business and to let a professional web designer develop a professional looking website for you.
