How often should I replace my mattress?

By Sandy Beaumont

Replacing the mattress on our bed is not something most of us tend to think about, until of course the mattress starts causing problems. A poor quality, old or worn out mattress can stop you from getting a good night's sleep, which can affect your health. This is why you need to be able to spot the signs that your mattress needs replacing, and take action.

The mattress industry advises that you change your mattress roughly every five to seven years, but this of course depends on the condition of your mattress. Some wear out sooner than others, whilst other mattresses last beyond the five-year mark. It is a good idea, however, to use this guideline to prompt you to check your mattress.

Your mattress' condition is a big indicator as to whether it needs replacing or not. Try a few simple tests, such as sitting on the edge of your mattress to see if it supports your weight. If it collapses, it needs replacing. You should also look out for any dips in the mattress, as well as sagging in the middle.

Additionally, you should feel and look for coils and springs where they don't belong, and listen for creaking when you move on the mattress.

Another key factor which tells you when you need a new mattress is your personal comfort. Your mattress may need replacing if you regularly wake up unrested and uncomfortable, with aches and pains, or you can't get to sleep in the first place.

On a final note, there is another reason why you may want to change your mattress. This is a change in lifestyle such as moving in with your partner, for example, for which you may need a larger king size mattress rather than a single or double mattress. Another big change is pregnancy, which requires a more supportive mattress or one such as a memory foam mattress which adjusts to shape.
