History of Candy

By Joshua Adekane

We all have favorite candies from our childhoods. Why? Because although they are unhealthy, candies are good and they instantly make us happy. They are fabulous. Secondly, it's something that people don't mind going out of their way to buy. And frankly, candies and sweets just keep us from being down! Here are some interesting facts about the origin of wonderful candies...

Well...it all started...

Candies during the time were not as fancy as they look today. Moreover, chocolates didn't come to be until the mid-1800s. In the middle ages, the first candies only consisted of fruits and nuts that were covered in honey or molasses. And during the early days, only rich people were able to buy candies because they were so expensive. Nowadays, it is great to think that we don't really have to amass fortunes just to buy candies, and we can even buy them at wholesale prices! This is just one thing to remember whenever you eat candies! During that time, people have never heard of "wholesale" candies, much less have seen some!

How Candies Developed

We already mentioned the candy bar in its almost current form above. But of course, there are pioneers in changes as well as those that followed suit. Take the M&M's for example. Named for the two owners of the Mars Company, and made so that they wouldn't melt in your hands while you were sitting out during a hot summer day. Also, they were manufactured with consideration to the military's plight! (After all...it was truly hot and humid where many of the troops were sent!) In fact, they were exclusively only for the consumption of the military during the World War II.

Sticking Around

Candies have also weathered decades and still are here with us today. Chocolate is one example of a resilient candy (which wasn't really sweet when it was first discovered. How it ended up being made into candy when it started as a spicy thick drink is a mystery!), and even the candy corn. Furthermore, some of the candies that are still around today are actually products of ingenuity during the olden times! Nobody would have imagined they would last decades! So don't be surprised at what you might find out when you look for information about candies!

Finally...

Another fascinating story is about the candy bar that had to be brought to your doorstep just like the daily paper. That's right-that's how our friend the Heath bar started out! It's always fun to be informed about trivial stories about your favorite candy bar! (No pun intended, of course.) These are just a few fun facts and trivia about your candy. Who knows-maybe you'll discover out something you didn't know that absolutely fascinates you... we can only hope! Finally, just enjoy chewing your yummy, absolutely delicious candy! Maybe you'll even be prepared to pass your knowledge on! For those looking for a healthier snack but still a little sweet, I would suggest buying some wholesale dried fruits.
