Time for Kitchen Expertise: Kids Can Enjoy the Kitchen Too

By Lindy Maddersion

The kitchen is a fun place and kids should be allowed to take part in the activities. Kids feel a certain level of pride if they are asked to help prepare family meals. But all the kitchen chores can be dangerous if done on dirty surfaces. But given enough time to train, kids should be able to handle these things with no problem.

Kids get a sense of responsibility with every chore you give them. You're actually helping them mature nicely. Your kids will also learn the importance of cleanliness.

Age Appropriate Kitchen Activities

Some chores are for bigger kids. Each age group has a certain qualification for every task. You also need to consider the experience of the kids in handling cutlery.

Kitchen Chores for Very Young Kids

Mixing and whisking are fun chores your toddlers can do with you as a guide. A toddler can be in charge of telling you how many more cans of peas you have left in the pantry. Inventorizing canned and packed goods can also be a good chore. 5 year olds can be started on cutting using plastic knives.

Garlic peeling can be assigned to grade school level kids. You can make it easier for them to peel if you crush the garlic bulbs beforehand. Scrubbing carrots and potatoes can also be done by younger kids.

Older Kids In Charge of the Laminate Kitchen Worktops

Prep work proper can start as soon as your child is tall enough to reach the laminate kitchen worktops. Keeping the laminate kitchen worktops where the main prep work is done can also be an age-appropriate chore. They can even start cooking with heat.

Time for Clean Up

Kids should also learn how to clean up after the prep work is done. Even before your kids learn how to cook properly, they should learn to segregate. Tell them that laminate kitchen worktops that look spotless should still be scrubbed down. This is true especially if raw meat was placed on the preparation surface at one point.
