Better Uses For Old TV Cabinets

By Monica Smith

Play kitchens are extremely popular toys among younger children and toddlers. The sets generally feature kid sized ovens and refrigerators and come with a wide variety of plastic dishes and utensils. Unfortunately, they tend to cost upwards of two hundred dollars. Making one yourself, however, will ensure that you spend a lot less while getting to recycle your unused furniture.

Study the old cabinet's layout first and then plan your new play kitchen around it. The placement of the cabinets and shelves could be perfect spots for the set's oven or fridge. Consider sketching out the plan, including where the sink and tap holes will go, and then keep them nearby so you will have them as a guide.

Remove all the unnecessary shelves and glass and then give the fixture a thorough sanding. Then, use a saw to cut your desired holes. Make sure these openings are the correct size and then begin painting the object.

The cabinet's original cupboard doors can also serve as ingenious oven and cabinet openings. Obtain an aluminum tinted paint and paint the doors in it. For the stove door, coat the glass black or glue on dark contact paper to make it look like the real thing.

Reattach all of the doors and then add any final coats of paint. As for the play kitchen's sink, a stainless steel bowl can be used and old sink taps can be glued above it. Small plastic lids or coasters painted black can serve as a makeshift stove top and tiny knobs can be attached next to them. If you included a fridge, gluing small magnets to the door and frame will help make it more realistic.

Once the construction of the kitchen is all finished, start filling it up with appropriate extras. A large outdoor photograph can serve as a perfect window if it is affixed above the sink or oven. To add to the fun, fill the kitchen with plastic foods like fruit and cheeses and stock the cabinets with child sized pans and pots.
